Glossary

Hair Removal - Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a permanently hair removal process, Hair is removed by inserting a fine gauge needle into the hair follicle and destroying it with a small electrical charge. When the papillae and the follicle are destroyed, it won't grow hair anymore. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method that is permanent. The overall  success however, depends on the skill of the operator.

There are three types of electrolysis hair removal types. Galvanic, Thermolysis and Blend method. Compared to other hair removal methods, electrolysis can be a slow procedure. Since each individual hair has to be "zapped," it can take some time. Removing hair from the upper lip can take 4-10 hours. Electrolysis can be mildly painful for some patients. The Electrolysis hair removal technician's skill is also a factor in patient discomfort.

Hair  Removal - Laser

Laser hair removal is becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. According to the American Association of Dermatologists  the were more than 585,000 laser treatments were performed in 2002,.

Laser hair removal works by emitting a low energy laser that gently removes unwanted hair. "The laser energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. In a fraction of a second, many of the treated hair follicles are injured by the heat generated by the laser."

Laser hair removal is a gentle treatment method and is suitable for both men and women. When selecting a laser treatment firm, choose only those with licensed and professional medical personnel. Laser hair removal procedures mostly occur in a doctor's office

Laser treatments can last from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the size and area treated. Laser hair removal does not require needles or creams. It is a non-evasive procedure. With laser hair removal equipment, thousands of hairs can be targeted in a single treatments session which means it can effectively treat popular areas such as the legs, arms, back, chest and shoulders.

Laser hair removal is not permanent in most patients. However, it can significantly reduce unwanted hair and the appearance of hair growth. Due to the way hair grows in 3 stages, 3-7 treatment for up to 6 months may be necessary. Common side effects include brief swelling and redness which usually disappear in 2-10 days.
