1 General Wash and Dry Instructions

General Instructions -  Also read specific instructions for synthetic wigs and human hair wigs below.

Generally, a wig should be washed after 12-15 wearings in spring and summer and after 6-8 wearings in fall or winter. Factors such as air quality and humidity will contribute to frequency of washing, as it does with your own hair. Always keep your own hair clean when wearing your wig to reduce washing frequency.

Before washing, brush straight styles gently but completely with a wire brush. Brush curly styles lightly with a vent brush or pick, keeping curls intact.

Add a cap of Wig Shampoo to basin of cool water (never use hot water). Immerse wig, dousing it gently, and allow to soak for 2 minutes. Rinse completely by swishing in clean, cool water. Gently squeeze excess water from wig. For high lustre and softness, apply hair conditioner. Leave on 5 minutes and rinse well, in cool water. Gently squeeze out excess water.

On curly styles, lightly finger squeeze curls while wig is still wet.

On all styles, gently towel blot wig to remove excess wetness. Place wig on a clean dry towel and allow to air dry naturally. Do NOT comb or brush a wet wig unless you are completely restyling it. Do NOT dry in direct sunlight. After wig is dry, shake out and style.

Always place dry wig on wig stand when not being worn.

2. How do I wash my Synthetic hairpiece?

1. Draw enough lukewarm water in a large pan or bowl to cover wig or hairpiece well.
2. Dissolve a capful of synthetic wig shampoo, along with 1 tablespoon of baking soda.
3. Swish wig or hairpiece in water. Gently scrub front of wig cap until clean.
4. Rinse wig well in plenty of cool or lukewarm water.
5. Draw fresh lukewarm water. Dissolve 1 or 2 tablespoons of wig conditioner. Work mixture throughout wig or hairpiece. Do not rinse the wig . Lay wig on towel and pat out excess water.
6. Pick or comb out the wig gently, pin on styling block and let it dry overnight. If necessary, a curling iron may be used on LOW or WARM, Not HOT setting. Please practice caution here. If you do not know how to do this have a professional do it for you and if you can watch closely and ask questions.  Practice on an old wig to get the heat and feel right.

3. How do I wash a Human Hair Wig?

Always use a vent brush or pick for curly styles and a wire brush for straight styles. Avoid using standard hair brushes, as these brushes can create excessive tension, over-stretching the hair with abrasive strokes that may damage the hair.

THINK IN REVERSE when brushing your wig. Start from the ends and work gradually toward the ends and work gradually toward the root area of the hairpiece. When using a wire pick work the curls from ends to root area as well.

STYLING IS GREATLY ENHANCED between washings with Liquid Mousse. For curly or wavy styles, it is considered an essential styling tool. Just mousse, hand scrunch and pick the style into curls. On straight styles, mousse and brush lightly. Conditioners also are recommended to maintain your hairwear.
 

1. Draw enough lukewarm water in a large pan or bowl to cover the wig or hairpiece well.
2. Dissolve a capful of prescribed wig shampoo, along with 1 or 2 teaspoons of baking soda.
3. Swish wig or hairpiece around, squeezing hair gently. wig Keep hair moving in one direction or it may tangle. If  front of cap is dirty, it may be scrubbed gently.
4. Rinse wig well with plenty of lukewarm water.
5. Dissolve a capful or so of wig conditioner in enough water to cover well. Work mixture through wig hair (remember: one direction). Do not rinse. Lay wig out on towel and pat out excess water.
6. Pin on wig form and pick or comb out gently. Wig may be set in rollers if desired and placed under dryer or left to dry overnight. A hot curling iron may be used on 100% human wigs, but on human-synthetic blend wigs, don't let the iron get too hot or it will damage the synthetic wig fiber. Please practice caution here. If you do not know how to do this have a professional do it for you and if you can watch closely and ask questions.  Practice on an old wig to get the heat and feel right.

4  What kind of wig shampoo wig and conditioner should I use?

Use only wig products formulated specifically for synthetic or human hair wigs. Using regular products on the wig fiber or hair will coat the hair and cause it to look dull and lifeless.

5  Can I use a blow dryer on my wigs?

A blow dryer on warm setting may be used on human hair wigs, but using a blow dryer on synthetic fiber wigs tends to remove the curl and body. Remember, synthetic hair wigs are just very fine, plastic fibers and, depending on the quality of the fiber, they may be damaged by heat.

6  How do I style my human hair wig?

TO SPOT STYLE, add mousse or gel and use electric rollers on a medium setting. Only hair directly in contact with rollers will be spot set. If necessary, a curling iron may be used on LOW or WARM, Not HOT setting.

TO COMPLETELY RESTYLE, a human hair or human hair blend wigs we recommend taking your wig to a local professional stylist. (Since it is not possible for you to work face to face with a stylist  over the internet it is very iffy that you will receive what you want.)

If you decide to restyle at home, going from curly to straight or vice versa, please read these guidelines. (1) Place wig securely on wig stand. Use electric rollers, regular rollers or pin curls. End papers are recommended with rollers or pin curls. (2) Removes tangles with a wig brush. (3) Using the same directional styling as on a human head of hair, pick up hair and wind on roller or curl, smoothing ends as you go. (4) Use a medium setting with electric rollers or hair dryer. With a hair blower, be sure to circulate medium heat evenly and continuously, keeping about 12" from wig. (5) Allow hair to cool before removing rollers or pincurls. (6) Lightly backbrush or backcomb and tease up on areas desired. Brush style in place, using Liquid Mousse.

 7 How often should my wig or hairpiece be styled?

A good rule of thumb is to have it cleaned and styled after approximately 15 to 20 wearings, depending on your lifestyle, your environment, how much you perspire, and how clean you keep your hair or scalp underneath.

8 Can I use a curling iron on my wig or hairpiece?

A hot curling iron may be used on any human hair wig, but some types of wig hair are more difficult to curl with an iron. I recommend setting on rollers and using a hairdryer to set the curl. Synthetic wig hair is different. A warm iron may be used, but a spray conditioner should be misted onto the hair to protect it before heat is applied.

9  Will this human hair wig be a difficult style for me to take care of?

All human hair wigs require some styling after they are   washed because just like our own hair, it goes straight when wet. You can blow-dry it and use hot rollers or a curling iron, or you may wet-set it and dry it under a hairdryer. If you want something easier to take care of,  I recommend the human-synthetic blend. It gives you the best of both worlds--the look, feel, and longevity of human hair along with the synthetic's ability to hold its shape after washing

Many of the wig suppliers listed on our pages will be happy to clean, condition and re-style the wig you bought from them. Simply email them to find out the instructions for getting the wig to them and to find out the cost.

If your supplier does not recondition wigs themselves they will be able to tell you who they contract with to do the work and you can contact that company directly.
